The Bayelsa State Polytechnic Amendment Bill 2018 has gone through second reading on the floor of the State Assembly.

Moving the motion for the amendment, Leader of the House, Hon. Peter Pereotubo Akpe said that the bill seeks to transfer all assets and liabilities of the Government Technical College Aleibiri and the Bayelsa State College of Arts and Science to the new Bayelsa State Polytechnic at Aleibiri in Ekeremor Local Government Area.

He further explained that all persons who were officers and members of the academic, administrative, technical and other staff of the Bayelsa State College of Arts and Science before the commencement of the amendment law are hereby transferred to the Polytechnic at Aleibiri.

Hon. Daniel Igali and Hon. Watson Belemote who both spoke in favour of the amendment argued that it will expand the frontiers of education in the state and help the polytechnic assume full operational status.

Hon. Belemote equally appealed to Government to resuscitate the Maritime Academy at Okpoama, Brass in the light of Government’s policy focus on education in the state.

The bill was committed to the House Committee on Education to report in one week.
